Ali and BediniBugyal Trek

Duration : Ex- Delhi, 6 Trekking days.
Trek Grade :
Khaliya Peak Trekking
Open Vistas, with soft grass underfoot strewn with wild flowers and streams, a low mist rising from the valley below, snow capped peaks with icy slopes. If this seems like a description of heaven to you it almost nearly is, this is Ali and Bednibugyal.

Day 1 : Delhi - Kathgodam - Sattal (By train / By car)
Take the Shatabdi Express from AnandVihar terminal, departing at 06.15 hrs, reach Kathgodam by 11.30, board the waiting Vehicles and climb up to Sattal. Optionally drive from Delhi to Sattal.

For people who want to avoid day travel/ save a day, take the overnight train from Old Delhi Railway Station to Kathgodam (Train No. 5013, Departure 22.40 hrs. IST)

Day 2 : Sattal – Ranikhet – Kausani – Gwaldam (152 kms, 5 – 6hrs)
After Breakfast, drive to Gwaldamvia Ranikhet and Kausani. Gwaldam with its salubrious climate is a little heaven nestling in the words. In this area, upto Talwari, there are several orchards - generally of apple. This place gives an awesome view of the Himalayan peaks mainly Trishul, Nandaghunti and others. We stay at the GMVN guesthouse here

Day 3 : Gwaldam -Loharjung- Wan – Ran Ki Dhar (2439 mts. 60 km drive, 3 km trek 5 -6 hrs.)
Today’s drive takes us firstly into the Pinder valley, and then we climb up to Lohajung Pass (2,133m). From here a jeep road leads northwards to Wan (2439m). We start our trek from Wan. The ascent is quite gradual through the village. The campsite is beyond the village on a ridge that offers marvellous views of Trishul peak..

Day 4 : Ran Ki Dhar – Neel Ganga – GairoliPatal ( 4.5 kms, 3-4 hrs)
Ran Ki Dhar is a great Birding site, so we start leisurely from here. The path initially descends for about half an hour (1.5kms) to Neel Ganga. The crystal clear waters of the Neel Ganga, with trees overhanging the river and water falling over the boulders, are inviting enough to take a break, before you start the steep climb. After a short break, there is a steep climb through a dense forest of Oaks and Rhododendrons. Take it easy as the pace is slow and the views around are magnificent. After about 2 hrs.of climb we reach GairoliPatal, a clearing marked with green trekkers huts and tall trees all around. We camp here for the night.

Day 5 : Gairoli Patal – Ali Bugyal (5 kms, 4 hrs)
Today’s trail again is steep ascent initially till we are at the end of the tree line, then a gradual ascent leads to Ali Bugyal. As we get the first glimpse of Ali – a long stretch of green carpet going in all directions, all the fatigue and tiredness of the climb is replaced by the awe of the undulating meadows around. To camp is tricky as you are spoilt for choice as each spot you pick seems to be better than the previous one. However we camp in the proximity of the water source. If the weather is clear, you get jaw dropping views of Trishual and Nandaghunti peaks.

Day 6 : Ali, rest day, visit to BedniBugyal
towering at 7120 mts right in front. Also visible are Chaukhamba, BanderPoonch and Nilkantha in the west. The morning is free to move around the green carpeted meadow ! Later we go for a walk to Bednibugyal which is an easy 5 km walk over the ridge.
Khaliya Peak Trekking
Day 7 : Ali Bugyal – Didna (8 kms , 3-4 hrs)
An easy day as we descend toTolapani, and then further to Didna through the dense Rhododendron and Oak forest. We are getting back to civilisation and we camp close to the village.

Day 8 : Didna – Loharjung – Kausani (3 hrs of trek, 4-5 hrs of drive)
We descend to Neel Ganga again and it’s a good idea to take a dip in the clear cool water and clean away all the dirt and grime. A climb of 1.30 hrs takes you to the road head where we bid farewell to the support staff and board the waiting vehicle to drive to Kausani. We stay in a Hotel for the night.
